Social Entrepreneurship City is an alliance that packs a punch!

An impactful alliance

Why do we need to pack a punch? To strengthen socialpreneurs as catalysts for social and environmental change in Hamburg! The realisation that this is no easy task prompted the creation of the “Hamburg Alliance for Social Entrepreneurship” in mid-2023 with the backing of Ministry of Economics and Innovation. Also on board were Körber-Stiftung, Social Entrepreneurship Network Germany (SEND), Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Freien Wohlfahrtspflege Hamburg, Kombüse Verein, Holistic Foundation and Hamburg University. A bright mix of enthusiastic impact leaders, tasked with bringing Hamburg’s social entrepreneurship strategy to life.

First, a quick recap on the historical background: In 2021, the Ministry of Economics and Innovation was tasked by the people of Hamburg with developing a social entrepreneurship strategy for their city. Although social enterprises were already working hard to develop solutions to the challenges of urban society, there was no holistic funding available to maximise their potential for Hamburg. After two years of dedication and a participatory process involving numerous stakeholders, a plan was finally unveiled in early 2023.

The alliance and its branch office are exploring ways of implementing the formulated ideas for a resource-friendly, community-oriented innovation culture in Hamburg. Work began in November 2023 with a full-time team of six. Their common purpose: To channel social innovations and effective partnerships into ensuring that the common good is at the heart of everything we do in Hamburg.

Now well underway …
