There are plenty of success stories in Hamburg, but not everyone benefits. Some of us find this unacceptable and are committed to finding solutions to some of our most pressing problems, thereby transforming Hamburg into a city of social entrepreneurship. The innovative ideas include schemes to tackle inequalities in educational opportunities, homelessness and the squandering of resources. It’s high time we raised the visibility of this alternative entrepreneurial spirit. Let’s create a karma cluster and proactively tackle problems as a community, rather than just complaining about them. Become an official advocate for your city and inspire others to join us.

How do I apply for membership?
Becoming a Citizen is easy: Depending on your sector, you will be asked to complete a form which includes a series of questions about your goals, impact and financing methods. We apply a set of criteria to determine whether you meet our definition of a social enterprise, including whether your enterprise contributes to at least one Sustainable Development Goal or reinvests its profits primarily for the benefit of its corporate mission. After submitting the form, we review it and may get back to you with any queries. Provided we decide you are a good fit, you will be welcomed into the City!
How long will we have to wait for an answer?
The process generally takes about six weeks. Why so long? Because we really want to carefully consider every application. First, they are assessed by two members of the team and then passed to our board for a decision. All applications received over the course of a month are bundled together and reviewed as a set.
Who can apply?
Membership is not limited to social enterprises! Organisations from many other sectors are also eligible, provided they can prove their commitment to social entrepreneurship. These include charities, administrative, academic and welfare institutions, private-sector companies and consultants. These sectors are collectively known as our “partners”. Social enterprises in the pre-startup stage are also eligible to apply.
